The sound of glass shattering shocked both Lily Raven and Ruby. The two women stared at each other for a moment. Loud noises from outside, shouting, horns honking, an engine screaming added to the confusion.

On finding the electricity out, the two women had thought to pull a few files and work from home. Teller had gone outside, saying he wanted to look around.

Bea discovered the problem first and used her cell phone as a flashlight to check the electrical panel in the basement. Everything looked good according to her. She used her cell to call the electric company and electrician they usually used.

Her key had opened the main door to the office as they had planned, just in case such a thing might happen. Alaska was subject to earthquakes and it was best to be prepared.

“What was that?”

Ruby stared wide-eyed at Lily Raven. “I smell smoke! Is that coming from the library?”

“I think so. Let me grab the fire extinguisher from the kitchen. You grab those files. Don’t open the library door yet.”

Grabbing the folders in one hand, Ruby stuffed them under her arm. She gathered up Lily Raven’s purse and slung it on her shoulder before reaching for hers.

Lily Raven dashed out of the kitchen with a fire extinguisher in one hand. “Take that and get outside. I'll open the library door. If it’s on fire, when I open the door it might get worse.”

“Auntie, don’t do it. Come out with me. Let Teller look.”

Lily Raven didn’t respond. She marched to the library door, jerked it open and a roar of flames responded to the rush of air. Then came the sound of the fire extinguisher. Men’s voices behind her caused Ruby to turn.

“Teller, get her out of here. I’ll get Lily Raven.”

Ruby found herself bodily hauled out through the door and down the stairs. Something about the man who ordered Teller to remove her bothered Ruby. “Who is that? Who is the man in there?” She dropped everything and grabbed Teller’s arm. “Who the hell is he? Is that your father?”

Another man, one with a black beard and mustache leaned against the back of Teller’s Jeep. He had both arms around Bea. That man responded to her question while Teller stared at the doorway.

“That’s Destry Burnett. He’s Teller’s uncle.”

“If they don’t come out of there in two minutes, I'm going in.” Teller pulled away from her and took two steps before Destry came down the stairs and out the front door with Lily Raven right behind him. He had one hand around Lily Raven’s wrist.

Sirens grew closer, the fire department would be there any minute. Ruby thought she heard a police siren too. Her auntie came to a complete stop and jerked backward with a curse.

“Destry Burnett, what the hell are you doing here? What the hell are you doing in my office?”

The blond man with shoulders a little wider than Teller’s spun around. He grabbed Lily Raven by the upper arms and gave her a slight shake.

“What the hell were you thinking?”

“You have no right to question me.
